How To Keep Bone Density In Your Jaw Following The Extraction Of A Tooth

Keep Bone Density in Your Jaw

Tooth extraction can happen for a variety of reasons, including gum disease, severe damage to a tooth, or even wisdom teeth removal.

However, the removal of a tooth can lead to the weakening of your jawbone if not properly managed after your extraction. It is important to ensure proper care so that you can maintain a healthy smile supported by a strong jaw.

Depending on the teeth that were removed, it may be necessary to replace the removed teeth with dental implants. Dental implants are a viable option for people who had a single tooth removed or multiple teeth removed. Dental implants work like your natural teeth, providing rigidity and strength to your jaw. After we remove a tooth or teeth, we can assess whether or not you will benefit from having dental implants.

Another way to enhance the strength of your jaw after a tooth extraction is bone grafting. We can utilize bone grafting if bone loss has already occurred in the jaw due to oral diseases and after extraction we will identify if it will be a beneficial solution for you.

How Dental Implants and Bone Grafting Work

When getting dental implants, we will sedate our patient as it will require cutting into the jawbone. We will drill a small hole into the jawbone and gently attach a screw base into the bone. Afterward, the gum will be placed back around the implant. Then, there will need to be a second surgery after the gum has healed. During the second surgery, we will connect the rest of the tooth to the screw.

Bone grafting can be used as a complement to getting dental implants when jaw structure has deteriorated. For bone grafting, we will either use artificial bone or a sample of bone collected from you. After this, we will graft the bone into your jaw for added rigidity.

It is always important to keep of oral care and dental hygiene so that tooth extraction is less warranted. We are always proud to serve new patients and educate them on matters like this. Please come in for a visit or schedule an appointment by calling our office.
